What is the Peace Squad?
The Peace Squad at Walker Upper Elementary School is a group of 5th and 6th students who believe that it's cool to be kind! Through an after-school training program, students work to make our school a kinder place. They are trained to respond in safe and appropriate ways to bullying behavior and to help other students involved in bullying situations. Students are often more aware of kids who are isolated and of bullying situations than school personnel and parents, so this program is designed to give them the skills needed to play as much of a part of helping out and responding to bullying as the adults around them. Students in the Peace Squad are nominated by their peers for being KIND, responsible, and always willing to do the right thing. After a semester of training, students participate in an initiation ceremony where they share what they have learned throughout the semester. They pledge to promote kindness, to help stop bullying in any way that they feel safe to do so and to report bullying situations to support staff in the school when they see them. We hope that all students will feel more confident, cared-for, and welcomed by their peers. Once you're in the Peace Squad, you're in it for life, so students are expected to carry their Peace Squad responsibilities on to future schools.
