I am very proud of this group of Peace Squad students, and all of the Peace Squad students over the years. I am so fortunate to get to work with them and it thrills me to see such cool kids sharing such a great message. Go Peace Squad!
The Peace Squad had a big day today! Students who joined the Peace Squad this year had their big end-of-the-year celebration and Initiation Ceremony! Students met Mrs. Geddy and Mrs. Barnett in the library, where they received sweet goodie bags, donated by Whole Foods. Thanks Whole Foods! We left school an hour early to go to AMF Keglers Bowling Alley! The staff at Keglers were super efficient in getting us shoes and 9 bowling lanes, allowing us to bowl for an hour and a half and have lots and lots of fun.
After our bowling adventure, we surprised the kids by stopping at Kohr Bros on the way home! Thanks so much to Kohr Bros who treated us all to a free ice cream cone. The kids (and adults) were very happy.
After spoiling our appetites with dessert before dinner, the students THEN chowed down on a fabulous dinner, very generously donated by Eppies on the downtown mall. We had chicken, mac and cheese (everyone's favorite), rice and beans, corn bread, and pumpkin bread. Thank you so much for your generosity, Eppies! You filled our stomachs and our hearts.
After all of this fun, families and Walker staff joined us for our initiation ceremony in the Walker auditorium. Each student got up in front of the crowd to deliver a short speech, sharing what they learned throughout their year in the Peace Squad. Many students performed in You-Tube skits to demonstrate the 6 approaches (which can be seen under the "How Can I Help" tab of this website). At the end of our ceremony, our students shared their reasons for being in the Peace Squad, and they recited a pledge. Check out the footage of the Pledge here:
And watch the kids talk about why they choose to be in the Peace Squad:
And... following the ceremony, we had a giant cake donated by Sam's Club. We are so lucky to have such great support in Charlottesville. None of this could have happened without the help of Kerry and Emily Rock, who have so generously donated $2000 over the past year. We love you Kerry and Emily Rock! We hope you enjoyed your thank you cards, made with love by the Peace Squad.

The 6th Grade Peace Squad students all participated in a video meant to help rising 5th graders feel more comfortable in their transition to Walker! Thanks, Peace Squad kids, for sharing your Walker wisdom!
Check it out on the Walker website: Video You may be wondering, where did the Peace Squad get their money?! Well it's from these 2 fabulous people: These are my dear friends, Kerry and Emily Rock, who have now fully funded our Peace Squad for the 2nd year! With their generous donation, we have purchased tee-shirts, banners, car magnets, bowling, party supplies and treats! They're not only generous with their financial support, but they're always willing to help with ideas to make the Peace Squad bigger and better. And they're just great to be around them. Kerry and Emily Rock, you ROCK! The Peace Squad loves and appreciates you!
The Peace Squad did their first flash mob today during our SOL Pep Rally! We have been practicing for about 6 weeks during the student's lunch and recess. We had some hiccups with the sound, but the Peace Squad just kept on dancing! We had a lot of fun putting this together, and that's what matters.
Special thanks to UVA Counselor Ed student, Nora Covert, who helped coordinate the dance and to keep Mrs. Geddy sane throughout the process of coordinating a dance with a LOT of students! Check out the video of our dance! Thanks to our school librarian, Ms. Flowers, who caught this footage And look! Our Pep Rally (including the Peace Squad) made the news! CLICK HERE! On April 26, the Peace Squad marched in the Charlottesville Dogwood Parade for the third time. The students created posters and wore Peace Squad shirts and some pretty wacky tacky attire. We had perfect weather and had a great time spreading our message about being kind. The best part, in my opinion, was all of the great chants that the kids came up with. "We are the Peace Squad, couldn't be prouder, if you can't hear us, we'll yell a little louder!" We want to wish a special THANK YOU to Katie Jackson of Partytrap Studios for taking our parade photos and for being Mrs. Geddy's BFF since 2nd grade. Also, a giant thank you to Kerry and Emily Rock, who supported the Peace Squad for the 2nd year! |
